Total value of the equipment procured, having for its goal improvement of waste management for the Public Utility Companies from Berane, Nikšić and Pljevlja municipalities, was € 105.229,75, and it was implemented through the Cross-border project CLEAN. It was about procurement of containers for selective waste disposal (133 containers), 3 presses for packing of selective waste disposal, 2 wood cutters, 1 vacuum cleaner for public spaces and 125 concrete baskets for garbage.
Besides the valuable equipment, education of representatives of public utility companies and municipal services dealing with environmental issues and waste management from Berane, Nikšić and Pljevlja was organized within the project. It consisted of two cross-border trainings on sustainable waste management and recycling and the study visit to the Centre for Waste Management, CERO Gajke in Ptuj, Slovenia, where the participants had an opportunity to get familiarised with the best practices concerning waste management in the European Union.
As it is very important to inform citizens about the regular waste disposal for the development of sustainable system of waste management, the project stressed the improvement of ecological awareness of whole population, especially children and youths as a future of each society. Therefore, the educational lectures were organized for the inhabitants from the target municipalities, as well as for the primary school students from 1st to 4th grade, about the needs and importance of selective waste disposal and recycling. Media campaign also contributed to awareness raising, by billboard publishing and distribution of promotional material (t-shirts, linen bags, notebooks, pencils) which had a message By Saving Our Planet, We'll Save Our Home.
Within the project, the action plans were made which were consisted of basic information about the environment in target municipalities and activities which were realized during the project, aiming to contribute to the environmantal improvement.
The project "CLEAN-Citizens Environmental Learning Action Needed" was realized by FORS Montenegro – Foundation for the Development of Northern Montenegro and Nikšić Municipality in cooperation with project partners – Local governments and Public Utility Companies from Berane and Pljevlja in Montenegro and Prijepolje and Nova Varoš in Serbia. The project was funded by the European Union as part of the Cross-border cooperation Programme Serbia – Montenegro and its goal was to contribute to the improvement of waste management in the cross-border region, capacity strenghtening of Public Utility Companies through equipment procurement and trainings for the employees, as well as citizens' awareness raising regarding regular waste disposal. The cross-border cooperation between the institutions which deal with the environmental issues and waste management established through this project led to the exchange of experience and best practices related to the sustainable waste management and introduction of the system of selective waste disposal and recycling, and it has been assesed as a very important component, because both countries face similar problems and challenges in their efforts to solve this important issue.
Total project value for Montenegro is € 225,675.00, and the European Union contribution was 85%.
