On 26-28 November 2014, FORS Montenegro – Foundation for the Development of Northern Montenegro organised a conference with the topic ‟Development of Green Economy‟, in order to encourage development of an ecologically sustainable economy in the region. The Conference was held in Kolasin and opened by Ms Daliborka Pejovic, State Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, Mr Sladjan Maslac from the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro, Mr Djuro Milosevic, Deputy Mayor of Kolasin and Mr Veselin Sturanovic, FORS Executive Director.
Almost 70 representatives of civil sector from Montenegro and neighbouring countries, state and local authorities, international organisations, businesses and media took part in the work of the Conference and discussed the following topics: Green economy – development directions, Experience of EU and neighbouring countries with green economy, Business and green economy, Climate changes and green economy, Green projects and initiatives of civil society and Role of media in promoting the green economy concept.
The Conference was organised due to recognised need for increasing activities by the whole society, aiming at adopting green economy approach as a strategy for future which leads to social inclusion and reducing environmental disasters. Green economy is a mechanism for achieving sustainable development through reduced carbon emissions, efficient use of natural resources and social inclusion.
The Conference was organised within the project "Green Economy Initiative" implemented in thirteen municipalities in Montenegro – Andrijevica, Berane, Bijelo Polje, Danilovgrad, Zabljak, Kolasin, Mojkovac, Niksic, Plav, Pluzine, Pljevlja, Rozaje and Savnik. The aim of the project is increased involvement of civil society organisations in creation and implementation of local public policies and plans related to environmental protection through strengthening their capacity and promotion of the green economy concept. The project is funded by European Union, Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism of Montenegro and UNDP Montenegro.
