In order to inform youth on types and causes of natural and other disasters, their consequences and preventive measures for their reduction, educational lectures on Disaster Risk Reduction were organised from 21 to 28 April for 1st and 2nd grade high school students from Nikšić, Pljevlja, Plužine, Žabljak and Šavnik. The lectures were organised in cooperation with the Directorate for Emergency Management of the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro and its field offices in Nikšić and Pljevlja as well as Protection and Rescue Units from Nikšić, Pljevlja and Žabljak. The following topics were elaborated through interaction between lecturers and students: definition and types of emergency situations, authorities in charge of emergencies, most frequent emergency situations in Montenegro and the region in the previous decades, the role of youth in disaster risk reduction, preventive measures which should be undertaken by each individual, etc.
The increasing number of natural and man-made disasters worldwide causes the need for permanent education on reducing causes of disasters and activities which should be undertaken in case of disasters. Although we can never be completely safe, we can still do a lot in reducing consequences of disasters if we are, in the first place, well informed, familiarised with preventive measures and prepared to respond adequately.
The lectures were organised within the project "Cross-border Fire Protection" funded by the European Union within Cross-border Cooperation Programme Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro.
