Presentation of the DIRECT project

FORS Montenegro and the Directorate for Emergency Management of the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro organised a press conference on 22 March in order to present the project DIRECT – DIsaster REsilient Communities and Towns funded by the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) of the European Commission (DG ECHO). The speakers on the Conference were Mirsad Mulić, Director General for Emergency Management, Veselin Šturanović, Executive Director of FORS Montenegro and Matej Kejžar, representative of the Protection and Rescue Service of the Municipality of Kranj from Slovenia. The project is implemented in partnership with the Protection and Rescue Service of the Municipality of Kranj from Slovenia, Fire and Rescue Brigade of the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic and Czech Association of Fire Officers and has the aim to improve preparedness of local communities, institutions and services for more efficient response to a growing number of natural and man-made hazards.

Main project activities which will contribute to solving the identified problems were presented at the event: trainings for rescuers on protection and rescue in case of fires, floods, earthquakes, etc., field rescue exercises, trainings on Disaster Risk Reduction – DRR, development of evacuation plans for schools and local communities, awareness raising campaign related to disaster risks, study visit to EU, international conferences on DRR, etc.
Apart from the main activities, the importance of international cooperation in this area was emphasized as it will lead to the exchange of experiences and good practice models, both between the protection and rescue institutions and services as between rescuers who often face the same tasks and challenges in their work.

Total value of the project is € 736,257.34, out of which the EU contribution is € 552,131, or almost 75% of the project costs. The allocation for Montenegro is € 288,795 with the EU contribution of € 218,582. The implementation of the project began on 1 January 2017 and it will last for 24 months.
