The project CLEAN-Citizens Learning Environmental Action Needed was realized by FORS Montenegro – Foundation for the Development of Northern Montenegro and Nikšić Municipality in cooperation with project partners – Local governments and Public Utility Companies from Berane, Nikšić and Pljevlja in Montenegro and Prijepolje and Nova Varoš in Serbia. The project was funded by the European Union as part of the Cross-border cooperation Programme Serbia – Montenegro and its goal was to contribute to the improvement of waste management in the cross-border region, capacity strenghtening of Public Utility Companies through equipment procurement and trainings for the employees, as well as citizens’ awareness raising regarding regular waste disposal.

Main project activities implemented in 5 target municipalities included procurement of the equipment for public utility companies (containers for separate waste collection, garbage bins, waste press machines, wood shredders and a vacuum cleaner for public spaces) worth aroound 105,000 euroes, cross-border trainings on sustainable waste management, study visit to EU, workshops for primary school students, workshops for citizens and awareness raising camapign.

The cross-border cooperation between the institutions which deal with the environmental issues and waste management established through this project led to the exchange of experience and best practices related to the sustainable waste management and introduction of the system of selective waste disposal and recycling, and it has been assesed as a very important component, because both countries face similar problems and challenges in their efforts to solve this important issue.

The implementation of the project lasted for 23 months and was implemented from 11 July 2012 to 10 June 2014.
