EWRECA – Enabling Wildfire Risk Reduction and Environmental Conservation in the Adriatic Coast
FORS Montenegro is implementing the project EWRECA – Enabling Wildfire Risk Reduction and Environmental Conservation in the Adriatic Coast, which aims to improve wildfire prevention and risk management, strengthen resilience to climate change and enhance environmental protection in the South Adriatic area.
EWRECA brings together institutions and organisations from Italy, Albania and Montenegro to develop a more coordinated approach to wildfire risk management in the South Adriatic area. The project builds on the exchange of data, knowledge, experience and good practices, joint training and the use of modern technologies.
An important component of the project involves identifying pilot areas and improving wildfire risk assessment and mapping, as well as assessing potential measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change and adapt to increasing wildfire risk, with particular attention to the effects of wildfires on ecosystems and biodiversity and potential economic losses. The use of modern technologies, including unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and simulation models, will play a particularly important role in risk assessment and management.
Key planned project results include improved early warning systems and the development of a Wildfire Risk Communication Strategy. The tools, methodologies and procedures developed are expected to remain in use after the project ends and to be made available to other relevant national, regional and local institutions.
In Montenegro, FORS Montenegro will carry out a range of activities in cooperation with relevant national and local institutions. The Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology of Montenegro plays a particularly important role as an associated partner of FORS Montenegro, contributing expertise in meteorology, climatology, climate change, hydrology and other relevant fields.
